For perfume. I like fruity, green, and woodsy fragrances. Not necessarily all at once, but if all three were there, hmmmm....

Anyways, these are some suggestions I've come across that I'll be checking out once we are stateside in about 10 days.
  • Fruity
  1. Christian Audigier for her
  2. Natori eau de parfum
  3. Banana Republic Republic of Women
  4. Couture Couture by Juicy Couture
  • Green
  1. Eau Mega Victor & Rolf
  2. Lancome Hypnose Senses
  3. A Scent by Issey Miyake
  • Woodsy
  1. Nanette by Nanette Lepore
  2. Essence Narciso Rodriguez
  3. Twilight Sarah Jessica Parker

The Kindness of Big Business: A Story

Everyone is always ripping big business. They're cold, they're cruel, they're corporate. And much of the time, that's true. Yes, big business creates jobs, cheap products and innovative solutions. But in terms of finding the simple milk of human kindness, corporations aren't where you typically look. There's a reason people hate their insurance companies.
But every once in a while, you hear a story that makes you recognize that big business is far superior to big government, even in terms of pure benevolence.
This is one of those stories.
This week, my younger sister got engaged. Her fiance, David, wanted to propose in a dramatic way. There was only one problem: His dramatic plan conflicted directly with already-booked travel plans with the British airline BMI. In short, he needed BMI to change his nonrefundable ticket. He made several calls. On each of the calls, he told his story to a sympathetic female attendant, who would invariably coo, "Oh, that's so sweet! But those tickets are nonrefundable? Sorry about that."
Finally, he decided as a last resort to contact the airline through their website. He filled in a form with the following letter:
"To Whom It May Concern:
"I had a great idea. I might even call this great idea a dream, but I want you to take me seriously. I am flying this November from Israel, where I am studying to be a rabbi, to LA, where my girlfriend is studying to be a physical therapist, and flying from there to Chicago where her grandmother is throwing herself a Thanksgiving-birthday party (don't ask, it's actually more ridiculous than that). And a few short days later, I am due to return to Israel. Or so my naive and unsuspecting, yet sassy but pleasant, girlfriend thinks.
"That's where you come in, friend. Because the good idea, the dream if you will, is to let her drop me off at the international terminal where we say our teary goodbyes, but then cleverly traipse on over to a domestic flight heading to LA. I want to beat her there, see, and when she arrives, I want to greet her there with 12 dozen roses and a diamond ring.
"What's that? Does she see it coming? Not even a little. Great idea? I told you.
"There's one small difficulty. I have a flight going to Israel, not Los Angeles. The most ideal situation would be to delay that ticket until later in the week, say, Dec. 2 or 3, and buy myself a round-trip ticket to LA from Chicago. Then everybody wins. Especially me and my girlfriend (fiancee!), and even a little bit you, concerned reader, for helping me set up the best possible proposal my uncreative but pretty romantic mind could ever piece together.
"Ah, yes, the problem. My ticket, I have been told, is nonrefundable. Which means I cannot delay it till later in the week. But there's something else that I've been told, dear concerned reader, and that is that love conquers all, even the fine print. I hope I have not been lied to. I hope that somewhere, someone hidden behind a wall of red tape takes the time to get this far into my letter (kudos by the way) and realizes that with a couple keystrokes, she can change my destiny. I hope I can make my ever-loving girlfriend as happy as she deserves. I hope."
David sent the letter. Six hours later, he got a call from an attendant. "We got your letter," said the customer service representative. "And we found it intriguing." Five minutes later, his tickets were rebooked by the airline. And a few days later, he proposed to my sister in Los Angeles.
That's a story you won't hear about the DMV, the post office, or the folks who are going to be running the medical system if President Obama gets his way. Sometimes, even in the competitive world of business, love triumphs over red tape. When it comes to the government, the only thing that triumphs is the red tape.

But it amuses me that what is accepted wisdom in different areas around the world--take for example, here in India--is treated like some piece of who knows what when it was never forgotten here to begin with. (Besides which, the buckets they're using here can be bought for about 3-5 dollars, so the markup is HUGE to say the least.)

And you'd think I'd have a better handle on all the stuff I need to take care of before our departure to the US, but I'm currently in scramble mode. Thankfully, we're not going on holiday until the 16th (night) of Dec, but there's so MUCH to do. I've sorted the kids clothes, shoes, & closets. I've sorted out my Christmas cards, found my handy-dandy lap desk, and started on the newsletter. I've also sorted out both storage closets, chunked loads of junk, and donated books to our local depository. I've also put our empty suitcases on the ready, bought my new (massive) cabin purse, and completed the seasonal change over for all five of us. Now I have to put the finishing touches on gift list completion, actually pack for our trip, sign all the cards, get someone to promise to take care of the plants, complete our stateside shopping list, and, and, and, try not to lose my mind......

Smitha Thackeray leaves Shiv Sena to join Congress

Cookie crumbles for Sena

No one agrees with or cares for the divisive politics of the Thackerays, not even the daughter-in-law of Shiv Sena head honcho Bal Thackeray.
The Shiv Sena has been unfair to Maharashtrians with its unsophisticated, narrow-minded politics, and Smita Thackeray cannot take any more. Why should she stay in the Shiv Sena camp if she is being systematically marginalised by powerful elements in the Thackeray household? It was announced today that the 48-year-old Smitha Thackeray has left the Sena camp to join forces with the enemy - Sonia Gandhi's Congress party.
"I have become a big admirer of Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi and want to be part of the good work being done by them for the country," she stated, "I cannot stand the suffocation any more and have decided to join the Congress, which has a national and global vision. I now feel most comfortable with the Congress ideology" she added.
Goes without saying, Smita Thackeray's entry is a huge bonus for Congress and she will be given an important post in the party. Smita was a power centre in Maharashtra when the Sena-BJP alliance came to power in 1995. Several IAS, IPS officials and businessmen waited on her, seeking some favour or the other. The perception was that she was the person closest to Balasaheb.
Smita Thackeray praised Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi and the Congress for making India a united nation. In fact she had been in touch with Congress leaders in Delhi, and her decision to drop the Shiv Sena had already been made a few months ago. "I personally admire the way Soniaji has been leading the party and the country. Even though Rahul is maintaining a low profile, he too is doing enormous work for the nation," she said. "The fact that I am Saheb's daughter-in-law certainly helped. In fact, I owe everything to him and continue to hold him in high regard. But over the years, I found that certain elements in the household, who shall remain unnamed for the present, were seeking to marginalise me." she added.
Bal Thackeray's hoodlums had even tried to damage her image in many ways over the years. "They tried to dent my identity as a social activist and film producer. People in Bollywood used to get calls from these people, warning them against any association with me," she said. According to her, Bal Thackeray himself did not keep a single promise, and had in fact sidelined her. "I was promised a berth in the Rajya Sabha, but I was shocked when I learnt that my seat had been given to journalist Bharat Kumar Raut. In the assembly election too, I was promised a ticket, but it was denied to me for no apparent reason. One of my articles was published in the Sena mouthpiece, Saamna. But when I took the second article to Balasaheb, who is the editor, he refused to publish it. I got the message that I was not wanted any more, and tore up the article on the spot. It is painful to politically dissociate myself from the Sena, but I have no choice," she said.
The best part? Smita Thackeray does not the least bit want to join Don Corleone Raj Thackeray's Maharashtra Navanitman Sena, because she does NOT agree with his dirty, irreverent politics. "I am extremely proud to be a Maharashtrian," she said. "I speak only in Marathi with my two sons at home. In fact the first film being produced by my son Rahul, who has trained in film-making in Toronto, is in Marathi. But I want Maharashtrians to change with the changing times. English is today a powerful tool of communication. Even the Chinese are realising this. I want Maharashtrians to be exposed to the literature of not only P L Deshpande, but also of Premchand and other great writers in other languages. I am against attacks on fellow Indians and the damaging of public property."
According to her, Uddhav Thackeray should have been trained in politics before being given such a huge responsibility. "I have an identity of my own and am old enough to take decisions for myself. I do not fear anyone," she added.

I'm Slightly Uncomfortable

Indian Islamic symbol
Until I was eleven years old, the reality of my mother's identity was a murky thing. All that changed when one of her three half brothers came into our lives. Then all sorts of things changed. Our social circle expanded beyond recognition. Our favourite foods went from being hamburgers to being pulluos. My ethnic clothes went from being tie & dye affairs to being Moghul style silk/crepe/velvet ensembles. But most significantly, my religious upbringing went from being totally Christian to being a mish-mash of Islam & Christianity.

Were we confused? How could we not be? So then what happened?

Well, it was difficult for me to find my feet in both cultures, but not for the reasons you might think. You might think that there are insurmountable theological differences between the two, but as my family members explained it to me, the main differences arose more from political ideologies & ritual practices. The Muslims I've known are deeply spiritual, publicly gentle, artistically inclined, and inheritors of all the achievements of their religious ancestors.

So here's the part that makes me uncomfortable.

Where are these same people on the public stage? Whether it's in the form of famous Muslims, or actor portrayals, or otherwise, it seems that no one sees Muslims the way I do. Especially in this day and age, you're lucky if people don't secretly reach for something to ward off the supposed threat you might pose to them due to your "fanatical" leanings. I have been extremely lucky, but I know others who've not been. I know people who've been run off roads for their skin colour and beards. I know women who've been verbally assaulted for their ethnicity. And I know children who've faced rank & file prejudice from classmates, friends, teachers, administrators, and others.

I know at this time of year, it feels like we are bombarded with charity pleas and the like, but I'd like to suggest another for your consideration: the Pardada Pardadi Educational Society. If you're a regular reader of this blog or you know me, then you know that causes that support education and girls are very dear to my heart, and this one combines both. What I believe makes this one easier to support--not due to idealogy--is the fact that while they accept donations, they also have a store that sells products that the girls themselves make for retail. They used to have a retail location near to where I live, and I have shopped there, so believe me when I say that buying their stuff is easy. Their products are geared towards the home and are insanely good gift items. I know and you may know yourself because I might have given you something from their product line.

Please think about it.

I am a vain person. There, I said it. It's out there. So why am I telling you this? Because I don't think it's a bad thing. I think I'm actually doing the world a favour if I do the following:
  1. Get my eyebrows threaded
  2. Wear contacts instead of coke-bottle glasses
  3. Brush my teeth
  4. Get my hair coloured, cut, & styled by a professional
  5. Get my excess hair lasered off (I'm not saying from where)
  6. Get my various & sundry body parts waxed
  7. Work out with a trainer
  8. Get regular facials
  9. Have my skin microdermabrased
  10. Have regular pedicures
  11. Take a shower
  12. Use deodorant/anti-perspirant
  13. Curl my eyelashes
  14. Use skin care products from Perricone, Kinerase, philosophy, and Forest Essentials
  15. Wash my hands & face multiple times a day
  16. Read as wide a variety of things as I can
  17. Dress in figure flattering, complexion enhancing clothes
  18. Go shoe & handbag shopping
  19. Wear makeup
  20. Groom my trio (I love putting them in coordinating clothes for special occasions!)
  21. Groom my DH (not that he lets me do much or even that I have much to do)
Why? Because as I walk around this planet, interacting with others, I owe it to them to make seeing me, meeting me, and knowing me, as pleasant an experience as possible. And I hope that as I get older, if I start to fall off the wagon, someone who loves me will encourage me to get back on that wagon as this woman did.

When I'm around my own mother, I'd like to think that I do that for her, but there are limitations. First of all, my mom is beautiful. And she lives with the confidence of a woman aware of her looks. On the downside, however, my mom feels uncomfortable spending a lot of time and money on herself. There are items she will happily plonk money down for, but they don't always coincide with the things I think she should buy. In addition, my mom's confidence has meant that she ignores the signs of aging that regular maintenance would take away, so it can be an uphill battle to convince her to do certain things. But I love my mom--yes, I do--and so I do try when I'm around her. I don't succeed as often as I'd like, but that's okay. There's always another day.

To that end, read this article about an online group of mean judgmental moms. I hate when women act like the only legitimate way of behaving motherly is to out-mother each other. Are we really so caught up in the maiden, madonna, crone ideology that we are willing to behave like Stepford Mothers in order to prove who is the better mother, woman, ___________?

Union for gays, straight couple told

London: A straight couple who reject marriage but want to seal their love with a civil partnership were told that they could not because they are not gay.
Tom Freeman and Katherine Doyle, both 25-year-old civil servants, were turned away from Islington Registry Office in north London on Tuesday because the law says civil partnerships — brought in here in 2005 — are only for same-sex couples.
Undeterred, the couple said they will take their fight for equality to court.

“We want to secure official status for our relationship in a way that supports the call for complete equality and is free of the negative connotations of marriage,” Freeman said. “If we cannot have a civil partnership, we will not get married.”
A spokesman for Islington Council said: “The law dictates that a civil partnership is only for couples of the same sex. The council must follow the law.”
There are a small number of differences between a marriage and a civil partnership,
including that a marriage can
be conducted in a church, while a civil partnership cannot.

Couples in a civil partnership have the right to the same legal treatment across a range of matters as a married couple — including inheritance, pension, life assurance and maintenance rights. However civil partnerships can only be conducted by registrars, not members of the clergy, and the partnership cannot legally be called a “marriage”.
Freeman and Doyle, both 25, from Islington, have been in a relationship for four years.
Freeman said: “We think gay people should be able to
have a standard marriage and straight people should be able to have a civil partnership.”
“We want a choice and all other couples should also have a choice, irrespective of their sexuality,” the BBC News website quoted Doyle as saying.
Their bid was supported by human rights campaigner Peter Tatchell.
Tatchell said: “The ban on heterosexual civil partnerships is heterophobic. It is disciminatory and offensive. I applaud their challenge to this unjust legislation.” AGENCIES

125 kids fall ill after mid-day meal

Police Raid On NGO Kitchen At Khichdipur Finds Dead Lizard In The Food

Neha Pushkarna & Dwaipayan Ghosh | TNN

New Delhi: Poor quality midday meals being served in schools is not uncommon. But the rice and dal served at a government school in Trilokpuri on Wednesday came close to being poisonous. At least 125 students from Sarvodaya Kanya Vidyalaya in Block 20 of Trilokpuri in east Delhi fell ill after consuming a ‘stinking’ meal of rice and dal and had to be rushed to the hospital. The police later raided the kitchen of the NGO — Rao Raghuvir Seva Samiti — that had prepared the meal in Khichdipur and found that the food contained a dead lizard.
‘‘We have registered a case of negligence against the NGO and its owner Satya Nagar. However, we are yet to trace him,’’ said a senior investigating officer at the Mayur Vihar police station.
A total of 119 girls were admitted at Lal Bahadur Shastri Hospital in Trilokpuri and six others were taken to Hedgewar Hospital in Karkardooma. While nobody has been arrested, the government has ordered an inquiry into the incident.
‘‘If the government can’t provide good mid-day meals, it should stop this scheme. Don’t do this to our children,’’ groaned a parent, Nihali, whose daughter was suffering from high fever and stomach-ache on the hospital bed.
The state education minister was unavailable for comment, but officials from his department informed that the additional director has been asked to look into the incident and submit a report.
While most students were discharged, Nihali’s daughter was one of the 11 girls still
admitted at LBS till late Wednesday evening. ‘‘It seems the children had eaten stale rice and dal due to which they complained of giddiness. Though 114 students came earlier in the day, five were admitted later. We discharged most of them after keeping them under observation as they were stable. Nobody was serious,’’ said Dr R N Das, incharge, casualty, LBS. Parents blamed the government for not monitoring the quality of mid-day meals.
Said Bimla, who had to bring her niece to the hospital again after she was discharged earlier in the day, ‘‘She again complained of stomach-ache once we reached home. The government should take care of what is served to our children. Even the teachers are supposed to taste the food before giving it to the children. Why did they not check it today?’’ A student of class VIII, Kiran, added, ‘‘The food had a foul smell today. Some of my classmates informed the teachers but they did not take us seriously.’’
Though the principal chose to slip away from the back door of the hospital to
avoid a confrontation with angry parents, one of the school teachers explained it was possible that the teachers had only checked one box of the meals. She added that the meals were, however, stopped in the second shift for boys.
Police, meanwhile, said they have sent food samples for tests at their Rohini Lab. ‘‘We will wait for the report and might slap additional sections in the FIR after that,’’ said the investigating officer.
The parents’ distress was increased as they were asked to move out of the ward when BJP leaders V K Malhotra and O P Kohli visited the children. ‘‘We have been asked to stay out because some leader has gone in. I can’t even check if my daughter is doing fine,’’ said Uma Dutta, parent of a class VIII student.

Here in India today, Thanksgiving has been almost the last thing on everyone's mind. Hardly anyone is concerned with the turkey, dressing, sides, or dysfunction junction of family gatherings. What's on many people's minds, instead, is that 26/11 is the first anniversary of the Mumbai terrorist attacks. We've avoided the news channels, but have heard from many people about the constant coverage of the anniversary. Needless to say, there has been a somber mood blanketing the country. Of course, it doesn't help that the report about the events surrounding the Babri Masjid in 1992, are also plastered everywhere.

When we get to Atlanta, I'd really like a thanksgiving feast with all the fixing's, so let's see what we can make happen.

I'll give you a frickin' conspiracy. It may seem that I'm uncharacteristically vehement about this, this event caused untold trauma to "secular" India and its' denizens. Amongst the lives lost in the aftermath, were relatives of mine, so if you think things like this happen to other people, you're utterly wrong. Violence happens to people all around us. After living in the reality that is India, I am actually shocked that the government report has actually damned the perpetrators rather than just tip toeing around it.

Liberhan demolishes Parivar, calls Atal ‘pseudo-moderate’

Attack On Mosque A Result Of ‘Elaborate RSS-Led Conspiracy’

TIMES NEWS NETWORK

New Delhi: In a scorching indictment of the entire Sangh Parivar, the Liberhan Commission that probed the demolition of the Babri Masjid, has said the BJP, Shiv Sena, Bajrang Dal and VHP, hatched an elaborate conspiracy to not just demolish the Babri Masjid but bring the country ‘‘to the brink of communal discord.’’
In a voluminous report running into almost 1,000 pages, Justice M S Liberhan has spared no saffron leader, not even Atal Behari Vajpayee, who is termed as a ‘‘pseudo-moderate’’, pretending to keep a distance from the Ram Janambhoomi campaign when he was actually aware of the conspiracy. The report has dismissed all the arguments of the BJP leadership and its saffron allies to deny any preplanned plot behind the destruction of the Mughal era mosque in Ayodhya on December 6, 1992. The report, which took 17 years and 48 extensions to write, says the demolition was a result of the RSS-led conspiracy, rather than the spontaneous expression of

the sentiments of Hindus favouring the construction of a Ram Temple. As the report was tabled in Parliament on Tuesday along with the government’s action-taken report (ATR), there was hardly any excitement, barring the excitement generated by Samajwadi leader Amar Singh who lunged at BJP’s S S Ahluwalia for raising ‘‘Jai Sri Ram’’ slogans. This was despite the fact that the report lists not just L K Advani and Murli Monohar Joshi as being culpable, but also mentions A B Vajpayee as one of the persons responsible for misleading the people with his pretence of de
tachment from the movement. The report is a meticulous exercise to undercut BJP’s chief defence — that the demolition was a result of an upsurge of Hindu sentiments. It says that although the disputed structure was demolished by ‘‘the hands of the common man’’, what prompted him to do so was ‘‘the cacophony of religious righteousness and the zealot’s rhetoric’’ orchestrated by the Sangh Parivar. Talking to TOI, Justice Liberhan denied that he has indicted Vajpayee. However, he is only partly correct. The report does not put Vajpayee in the same league as L K Advani and Murli Manohar Joshi, let alone those the former chief UP chief minister Kalyan Singh who, according to the report, directly executed the conspiracy. But it does say that Vajpayee can’t be “held innocent.”
Justice Liberhan remains steadfastly focused on RSS as the source of conspiracy, suggesting that it was virtually running the Uttar Pradesh government, placing officers of its choice in key slots and removing those who were not ready to bend to its wishes.

‘Kalyan govt executed demolition plan’

New Delhi: The Liberhan Commission has identified formation of the Kalyan Singh-led BJP government in UP as the key to the execution of the conspiracy to demolish Babri masjid. The commission says that right since its inception the Kalyan Singh government set out to implement the plan to demolish the Babri masjid. It says that it the RSS was running a parallel government in UP. Significantly, the late P V Narasimha Rao, who was widely blamed for winking at the demolition conspiracy and who had to suffer insinuation that he was soft on Hindutva, has escaped unhurt. The Samajwadi Party and the Left are likely to pick on this as they resist Congress’s attempt to position itself as the chief custodian of India’s secularism.
The Commission tears into the argument that the temple campaign leading to the demolition had popular support and, therefore, the peoples sanction. It argues that there was no mass backing, and that people were manipulated into inaction and acquiescence for fear of being labeled anti-Hindu. It backs up the contention by saying that how the demand to build a temple at the spot where Sangh Parivar maintains Lord Rama was born has failed to get off the ground till BJP took up the cudgels for it. It also points to flow of funds tens of crores from unidentified sources and logistics involved in mobilisation of kar sevaks. Prognosis of the evidence leads to the conclusion that the mobilisation of karsevaks and their convergence to Ayodhya and Faizabad was neither spontaneous nor voluntary. It was well orchestrated and planned, in conformity with the army-like discipline of the orgnanisation like the RSS, says the report.
Coming down hard on the Kalyan Singh government — an aspect that should confirm the fears of Mulayam Singh Yadav who embraced the former chief minister — the report questions the argument of BJP and Kalyan Singh that they had the mandate to build a temple. “It is an open secret that unprecedented mass transfers were carried out by Kalyan Singh on taking office of the chief minister,” the report says.

WHODUNIT Liberhan’s Findings

Who demolished Babri Masjid?
“The hands that tore down the disputed structure … belonged to the common man … his better sense drowned by the cacophony of religious righteousness” unleashed by the Sangh Parivar

Who hatched the conspiracy? The Sangh Parivar, including RSS, VHP, Shiv Sena, Bajrang Dal and BJP. Demolition was pre-planned as it was carried out by a few, idol and cash box removed in time, makeshift temple erected and idol brought back according to plan

Vinay Katiyar

Who was responsible for it all? Responsibility is shared by 3 categories — the ‘radicals’, or those who brought the hordes and planned the demolition, the ‘pseudo-moderates’, including Vajpayee & Advani, who gave physical, ideological & intellectual support, and the ‘tertiary’ lot like officials who forgot their constitutional obligations and looked the other way

Who are the culpable individuals? Virtually every Sangh Parivar leader, including Vajpayee, Advani, M M Joshi, Ashok Singhal, ex-RSS boss KS Sudershan, Bal Thackeray — all of whom led the country ‘to the brink of communal discord’

THE OTHER WHODUNIT — The Report’s Leak
It’s still a mystery. The BJP on Tuesday attacked home minister Chidambaram who has already denied his role categorically. Liberhan, the other person with the report, has also denied leaking it
